Colored Nation

This is my first blog ever. Its my attempt to preserve what I see, read or gain as a knowledge in my Daily life.

COLORED NATION

India is always addressed as " Land of Colors". Every color has its own effect, its own emotion. Some depict sadness and happiness, some are cool and calm and some are warm and bright. India do have a vast history of colors.

If we go back to era in Indian architecture, when Indian temples were built in South India. Artist used to paint them in different vibrant colors. Primary colors like red, blue, green, yellow were so common in those days. These colors did made the temples stand out from rest of the buildings. Nobody in those era used to design these motifs on paper before painting it on the temples. It was direct from the artist's heart and even today it looks so beautiful and proportionate. For example temple Kapaleeshwarar from Mylapore has the entire Gopuram painted in beautiful colors.
In India, trucks play a major role in trading. The truck drivers here doesn't earn much. They fall under the category of low income group. Still they have a eye for appreciation of art. They treat their trucks as their dream girls and wanted to see them as beautiful as possible. They reserve some of their money to get their trucks painted the way they want. There is no limit to creativity in this aspect of art. They paint animals, flowers, goddess, gods on their trucks. These truck drivers believe painting a divine idol on their trucks will bring good-luck and prosperity in their business and moreover it will keep their vehicle safe and sound. I find it as a very unique kind of art and it has its own beauty. The strokes and the colors these artists use are wonderful.

Last but not the least I want to throw some light on art we all have forgotten with time, the "poster painting". Few years ago when the printing technology was limited the hoardings and posters were painted by hand. Such a big painting was printed by only one artist at a time. A small picture were used as reference to create such a big posters by these artists. They used a special color coding those days. The villains face were painted a slightly red to show anger. These artists used a tint of pink on Hero's face to make him look very fair and handsome. The comedian's face were painted slightly green in appearance. But as the time passed, the vinyl printing came into picture. Which was a biggest drawback for these artists, and now this form of art is almost on the verge of extinction. In India major of people are crazy about technologies and digital world. They never understand the beauty of  these paintings, this is the reason why these old banners are purchased by foreigners as they are very found of this art. Students around the world come to India to learn this art. A 73 years old man from calcutta was into this business said very disappointedly "I spent 52 years of my life in this business, but i will never be remembered in India but in foreign countries, through my paintings"...

Happy Holi to you all..
